We recommend strategies to protect the wealth and independence of individual family members. We work with our clients’ accountants, tax advisers and other specialists whenever required to recommend the most appropriate investment structures (personal, corporate, trust, superannuation) and implement solutions.

We advise on financial investment. We assess our clients’ attitude to risk and recommend the appropriate asset allocation for them. We recommend investment in cash, bonds, shares, property and alternative investments. We review and analyse investment opportunities that are not ordinarily accessible. We take a global perspective on our clients’ portfolios.
Our recommended investments include direct investment in quoted securities and in wholesale managed funds. Our chosen fund managers are asset class specialists, recognised leaders in their fields of expertise and people with whom we have had long term relationships. Our investment portfolio is expected to continue to outperform our recognised benchmarks.

We help our clients establish a governance framework for family decision making in wealth and investment matters. This is tailored to circumstances. It includes formal decision making and review processes and rules of engagement, as well as advice managing intergenerational change. The objective is to create a framework that is robust, accountable and inclusive.
Client Administration
Client Administration
We report to clients in person and online, regularly, for wealth management issues, investment performance, investment recommendations and for tax and accounting purposes. We respond to queries, ensure outstanding matters are addressed, make payments and provide reminders. It is demanding, detailed, essential and part of our offer.

Our People
Matthew Playfair
Director
Matthew Playfair has been providing client advice since 1984. He has expertise in wealth management and investment acumen for individuals, families, estates and not-for-profits.
Matthew has an ability to meet, identify, appraise and reassure clients about their private financial affairs. He combines insight, experience, common sense and gentle authority to provide clear direction, avoid pitfalls and plan for eventualities.
After 10 years with Potter Warburg/UBS in investment banking, private banking, equity and derivative sales, he was recruited to Macquarie Private Bank in 2002. As the senior partner, Matthew was responsible for clients. He set the standards and established the business practices for advising clients. Matthew was a member of the investment committee throughout, acting at different times as its chairman, head of the equity asset class and asset allocation.
He is a champion for transparency, independence, confidentiality and accountability in the management of clients’ private financial affairs.
Matthew has undergraduate degrees in Arts (1981) and Law (1983) from the University of Sydney and a Master of Laws from the University of Cambridge (1984). He has worked in London, Perth and Sydney in the legal, corporate and finance industries. Matthew has been a board member or head of a number of not-for-profit and charitable organisations, including previously as a director of the Sydney Theatre Company Foundation.
His wife Fiona and two university-aged sons are cheerleaders for PlayfairTan.

Francis Tan
Director
Francis has 20 years of experience in giving financial advice to private families. Francis has deep expertise in engaging private clients in their wealth and investment affairs, and in executing their estate and philanthropic wishes. He headed the wealth management practice at Macquarie Private Bank from 2005 until 2011 and over this period taught and mentored a number of private bankers, headed investment research, established an international business and presented at various industry forums.
Francis is a strong client-advocate who always puts clients’ interests first. He has represented clients in Government and industry submissions.
He completed his MBA at the Macquarie Graduate School of Management in 2012, is a Fellow of Financial Services Institute of Australasia, Associate of the Tax Institute of Australia, admitted as a solicitor by the Supreme Court of the ACT and completed his undergraduate degrees of Commerce and Law at the University of Sydney.
He is married to Phi and has two daughters.

Darren Cunneen
Investment Director
Darren Cunneen joined PlayfairTan in May 2014 as an investment analyst. A dedicated investment resource, he is responsible for optimal asset allocation, macroeconomic research, manager selection and equity analysis. Darren closely monitors clients’ portfolios and continually scans the investment landscape for potential opportunities. His passion for putting investors’ needs first is admirable and respected.
Before joining PlayfairTan, Darren was a research analyst at Morningstar Australasia where he conducted extensive quantitative and qualitative analysis of the full spectrum of asset classes. Previous to Morningstar, Darren worked as an investment manager representative in State Street’s Sydney office where he was responsible for efficient portfolio implementation. Darren’s career started in a derivatives role at Bank of Ireland. He then worked on an equities trading desk for London-based M&G Investment Management, one of the UK’s largest asset managers, before relocating to Australia.
Darren has a Bachelor of Finance degree with honours from the National University of Ireland, Cork, a Certificate in Mutual Funds from the Institute of Bankers in Ireland, and holds the United Kingdom Investment Management Certificate. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®) charter holder after passing all three CFA exams in three consecutive years. The globally recognised CFA designation attests to Darren’s success in rigorous and comprehensive investment management and research analysis.
As an avid traveller, Darren immigrated to Australia from London via a lengthy and adventurous world trip spanning more than 30 countries. Darren remains passionate about travelling, though prefers much shorter trips these days.

Van Tran
Associate
Van joined PlayfairTan in May, 2016 after ten years of financial services experience in London.
Previously she held roles within Barclay’s Private Equity and Deutsche Bank’s Product control teams.
Van holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of New South Wales, and registered as a Chartered Accountant of Australia.

Henry Mortlock
Associate
Henry joined PlayfairTan in 2017 as an Associate Adviser. He has a strong background in investments and financial markets having spent his early career with stockbroking firm Bell Potter Securities before joining New York based investment management firm VanEck Global where he spent three years.
He has a Bachelor of Agricultural Economics majoring in Finance from the University of Sydney. In 2011, he was accepted into the University of California, Berkeley to study an International Diploma in Business Administration. Henry is currently completing a Diploma in Financial Planning and wishes to become a Certified Financial Planner (CFP).
Henry has a desire to help people manage, save and grow their wealth. His aim is to help simplify the complexities of client financial affairs so that they can sleep easy knowing that they are on the right path to reaching their lifestyle goals.
Henry is an indiscriminate sports fan. He enjoys any opportunity to get outside with the golf clubs, surfboard or fishing rod.

Renee Souster
Wealth Adviser
Renee is a highly qualified wealth adviser with over ten years of experience in Australia and overseas. Her career took her from Sydney, to the Sunshine Coast and Middle East, advising private clients from a broad range of backgrounds, experiences and needs. Her expertise in wealth management includes advising on cashflow planning, repatriation management, investment and financial planning.
Renee started her career in Sydney as a graduate with NAB, working in the institutional banking division which gave her a foundation of technical, financial and compliance experience.
Renee holds a Bachelor of Business from the University of Technology, Sydney. She spent a semester studying in France. She also holds a Masters in Applied Finance from Macquarie University, a Diploma in Financial Planning and is working her way towards further study in this area.
Renee prides herself on delivering considered and professional advice with a personal touch.

Kelly Sheehan
Office Administrator
Kelly is a highly organised administration professional with over 10 years of experience spanning the financial services, engineering and construction industries. She began her career working for a taxation accounting firm in Melbourne where she completed Certificate III in Business Administration, which gave her a solid foundation of skills to build upon as her career progressed.
After relocating to Sydney in 2013, she gained further office management experience working for large scale engineering and construction firms. Driven by her passion for assisting and connecting with people, she was able to interact with clients and stakeholders at all stages of the contract chain.
Kelly thoroughly enjoys cooking and baking in her spare time and has a knack for pretending to know more than she does about sports.

Andrew Tay
Investment Analyst
Andrew joined PlayfairTan in October 2018 as an Investment Analyst. As a dedicated investment resource, Andrew works closely with Darren across all aspects of managing clients’ investment portfolios, formulating optimal strategies with regard to asset allocation, portfolio construction and manager selection.
Before joining PlayfairTan, Andrew spent over seven years at Willis Towers Watson’s global investment consulting business, where he advised some of Australia’s largest institutional investors on a wide range of issues with respect to managing multi-asset investment portfolios. He has extensive experience in portfolio modelling, liquidity analysis and stress testing. Andrew values the principle of putting clients first, an ethos that is immersed in the culture of PlayfairTan.
Andrew completed his undergraduate degree in Actuarial Studies from Macquarie University (2010) and a Master of Applied Finance at the Macquarie Applied Finance Centre (2011). He is a Chartered Financial Analyst ® (CFA®) charter holder and an Associate of the Institute of Actuaries, Australia.
Andrew grew up in Hong Kong, is an avid basketball player and is trilingual. He speaks English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
